(National Eye Institute) [<a href=\"https:\/\/nei.nih.gov\/health\/diabetic\/retinopathy\">https:\/\/nei.nih.gov\/health\/diabetic\/retinopathy<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Diabetes Eye Screening Program, hosted by South Riverdale Community Health Centre, is excited to offer eye screening at no cost to patients, including those that are uninsured, if they meet the following criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diagnosis of diabetes (Type 1, 2 or gestational),<\/li>\n<li>Referral from a physician or nurse practitioner,<\/li>\n<li>Has not had an eye exam that involves dilation of pupils within the past year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Diabetes Eye Screening Program is available in these locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anishnawbe Health Toronto<\/li>\n<li>Flemingdon Health Centre<\/li>\n<li>Parkdale Community Health Centre<\/li>\n<li>LAMP Community Health Centre (2 locations)<\/li>\n<li>Scarborough Academic Family Health Team (2 locations)<\/li>\n<li>South Riverdale Community Health Centre<\/li>\n<li>Unison Health and Community Services (4 locations)<\/li>\n<li>St. Michael&#8217;s Sumac Creek Health Centre<\/li>\n<li>WCH Family Practice Health Centre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The diabetes eye screening is done in 3 steps from the patient\u2019s perspective:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Patient\u2019s <strong>current vision<\/strong> is measured using an eye chart. Patient must bring their glasses or contacts for the exam.<\/li>\n<li>A numbing eye drop is given in each eye and <strong>intraocular pressure<\/strong> is measured. This is painless.<\/li>\n<li>Eye drops are given to dilate the pupils (for the best view of the retina) and a nurse will <strong>take photographs<\/strong> of the retina.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The images are sent securely to a retina specialist, who reviews the images, provides a diagnosis and recommendations on follow-up, if required.
